Incorporated in 1989, Dana Point has become a hub for home buyers seeking an upscale beach residence, with an understated humble environment to mix within. From stately appointed townhomes and condominiums to relaxed beach cottages or sprawling mansions overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Dana Point real estate runs the gamut in home styles, types and prices.
Homes in Dana Point differ greatly depending upon the community in which they are found. For example, with a concentration of historic homes, the Lantern Village located in the heart of the Dana Point, is made up of streets named after different colored lanterns, Blue Lantern, Street of the Violet Lantern etc. Colored lanterns were used by ships 200 years ago to advertise their fares when they pulled into the Dana Point harbor. These homes ooze with character and vary greatly in size and architecture. Here you will find classic Spanish, Victorian, Bungalow and modern architecture.
Like so many beach towns, homes in Dana Point are predominately sited within an eclectic mix of residential and multi-unit dwellings. However, Dana Point is also home to several planned, wealthy, upscale 24-hour guard gated communities. There are five that most visitors are familiar with; Monarch Bay, Niguel Shores, The Strand at Headlands, Ritz Cove and Beach Road Custom Estates, all very different in style, architecture and age.
Monarch Bay is located on the ocean side of PCH in Monarch Beach. Many homes here are single level, enjoy large level lots with coastline, white water, Ritz Carlton and Catalina Island sunset views. Unique in that it not only provides private beach access for its residents but also features a private beach club managed by the St.Regis resort.
Niguel Shores, also an ocean side community, truly embodies a Resort-like lifestyle. It offers extensive association amenities which include; clubhouse, tennis, pool, spa, fitness center, basketball and racquetball courts. To add, the community also has an oceanfront view park with a private parking lot and private beach access! Interestingly, this community provides not only upper-end oceanfront estates but also affordable homes, allowing young families to move in and enjoy a lifestyle most can not afford.
The Strand at Headlands, the youngest of these upscale communities reflects the epitome of the Southern California lifestyle. There are 118 custom home sites which oriented to the north, enjoying white water/white sand views, with the front row standing a mere 20 feet above the beach. The average custom home site is 10,000 sq. ft. and prices range from the mid $3 million to in access of $12 million. This community too, offers private beach access and a private beach club for its residents to enjoy.
Ritz Cove, an intimate Mediterranean inspired custom community offers spectacular white water, Catalina Island, ocean, city light, coastline, and golf course views. It overlooks Salt Creek beach as well as the serene fairways of Monarch Beach Golf Course. It too offers private beach access. Homes here tend to be on the larger scale offering subterranean garage space.
Beach Road Custom Estates are located in Capistrano Beach. Probably the oldest of these guard gated communities and the only community where homes are built right on the sand. Owning property on Beach Road means your property rights extend to the median tide line! It is known as a 2nd home destination for many and summer vacation rentals are plentiful. Its minutes To Dana Point Harbor, freeways, fine restaurants and Shopping.
If a guard-gated community isn’t necessary but you still desire a prestigious, ocean close community with spectacular white water, Catalina Island, ocean, city light views, Monarch Bay Terrace is the place. Not only is this community well known for its spectacular views, convenience to shops and restaurants but also for its sprawling single level homes.
