Local Lifestyle

One of the first things people notice when they come to San Juan Capistrano is the lavish homes in a vast array of architectural styles. However, there is a common theme among most homes and buildings within the city. They pay tribute to its Spanish history, which includes terracotta roofing, arched windows, doorways, etc.

As one of the most naturally splendid places to see in California, many residents enjoy a more active, outdoor lifestyle. This includes hiking through mountain trails, biking or strolling through parks, and relaxing in their very own outdoor space. Residents who prefer to stay indoors spend their time visiting quaint little shops, dining in upscale restaurants, and touring museums or art galleries.

Overall, there's something for everyone in this town with a modest population. It has a quaint suburban area feel, ensuring you never feel overcrowded. Yet, because it is a city, there's never a shortage of exciting things to do.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

One thing you can count on in San Juan Capistrano is the extensive selection of dining experiences. One option if you want to have dinner and a show is The Coach House. It is a unique restaurant and concert venue that allows you to enjoy live music and fine dining. Frequent concerts allow you to relax while sipping cocktails or enjoying superbly prepared Teriyaki chicken, decadent desserts, and more.

The Mayfield Restaurant & Marketplace is an upscale dining experience for your taste buds while remaining casual and unassuming in appearance. It is here that your dining options will include Amba glazed grilled octopus or Pichincha steak. For dessert, you can indulge in a Chocolate Budino and other similar options. If this doesn't satisfy your cravings for delicacies, try the Ramos House Cafe. Here you will find delightfully prepared basil-cured salmon lox with toast points and baby herbs, spicy crab cake salad served with smoked chili remoulade.

When shopping is what you desire, the Old Barn Antique Mall, Inc. is a fantastic option. It is the largest and most diverse antique mall in the world, with over 75 quirky dealers that sell everything from fine jewelry, to Tiffany-inspired home decor, and Asian antiques. No matter what your personal style is, there is something that will delight everyone who stops by.

Things to Do

When looking for entertainment with historical value, the Mission San Juan Capistrano is the place to be every March 19. It's the party of the season, held annually, and celebrated with parades, festivals, ringing bells, and more. Residents and tourists celebrate on this day because of the Cliff Swallows that once made nests in the arches of the Mission. Each year, the birds would come, raise their young, and venture back south around October 23. Though the birds have moved on to other areas with the expansion of this city, San Juan Capistrano is a bird sanctuary, and the city protects Cliff Swallows.

If you're looking for year-round happiness and enjoy golfing, the San Juan Hills Golf Club has a lot to offer. Its Par 71 championship course is an oasis for new and skilled golfers alike, nestled in among the rolling hills of the area.

Because of the extensive history surrounding this magnificent city, the Regency Theatres cannot be overlooked. This historical monument pays tribute to the 1930s. It was the Golden Age of Hollywood, when Clark Gable, Greta Garbo, Ginger Rogers, and Shirley Temple were the talk of every town.

With over 8,000 acres of wilderness preserves, the Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park is the place to go. This is the ideal location to explore rolling hills, camp, hike, and simply savor the great outdoors.
